Women’s Basketball Announces Incoming Class

MARS HILL, N.C.-Mars Hill's women's basketball team has announced their 2013 recruiting class, with seven student-athletes set to join the program.
Brittany Baker (Plainfield, N.J.), Paige Chavis (Lexington, N.C.), Sydney Comer (Lebanon, Tenn.), Hannah Hayes (Woodbridge, Va.), Victoria Leroy (Greer, S.C.), Katie Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) and Alexis Tyler (Annapolis, Md.) have all singed National Letters of Intent and will join the Lions' program this fall.
Baker, a 5'10 junior forward, attended Union County Community College for the past two years. Baker was Academic All-Region, 1st team All-Region, 1st team Garden State Athletic Conference and earned the prestigious Garden State Athletic Conference Woman of the Year Award. During the 2012-13 season, Baker averaged 16.7 points per game, 6.7 rebounds per game, and ranked 7th in the nation in total steals for NJCAA Division II with 73. Prior to playing at Union CC, Baker played for Coach Joe Skrec at Roselle Catholic High School (N.J.) and finished the 2011 season 24-4 while making a state semi-final appearance.
Chavis, a 5'8 guard hails from Lexington, N.C. In her four years at Lexington Central High School Chavis was voted a three-time All Conference, two-time All County, and 2nd-team All District player. As a senior, Chavis compiled 14.6 points per game, 3.2 assists per game, 3.9 rebounds per game, and 3.6 steals per game en route to a conference championship for Coach Kevin Hudson in his final season as head coach. She played AAU for the North Carolina Lady Magic and Coach Nate Fries.
Comer, a 5'9 guard, played at perennial power Wilson Central High School (Tenn.). Comer was a part of Coach Bud Brandon's teams that made three regional tournament appearances and were Sub-State Champions in 2011. The TSSAA scholar athlete led Wilson Central in assists and steals her senior season and was named the team's best defender in each of her last two seasons. She played AAU for Tennessee Team Pride and Coach Miranda Cravens.
Hayes, a 5'10 guard, averaged 10.5 points per game, 4 assists per game, 3 rebounds per game in her three year at Potomac High School for Coach Tiffiany Jenkins. Her junior year, she lead the area in three-pointers per game on Potomac's way to a Conference and Northwest Regional Championship in 2012. Hayes' high school career was cut short when the three-time second-team All Conference player was injured during a summer league game last fall. She played AAU for Coach Boo Williams' BWSL Nike Elite.
Leroy, a 5'5 guard, played at Riverside High School where she finished her career with 1,040 total points-averaging 14 points per game, 3 assists per game, and 3 steals per game her senior season. Leroy was voted All-Region three times, All-County twice, Greer Citizen Player of the Year (2012), MVP of Lady Sandlapper Holiday Tournament (2013), and selected to play in the FCA All-Star Challenge (2013). She played AAU for Coach Willis Holliday's Carolina Cougars.
Stevens, a 5'5 junior guard, played two seasons at Columbus State Community College for Coach Joel Renner. Stevens, a two-year team captain and starter, led her team to a 20-win season (2012) and 38 wins over the last two years. Stevens was named to the Honorable Mention-All Conference Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Team. Prior to Columbus State, she was a three-year starter at Pickerington High School Central, averaging 9.5 points per game and 3.5 assists per game in her senior campaign. Stevens was Second-Team OCC-Ohio Conference, Second-Team District 11, Honorable Mention Central Ohio District and Ohio Coaches Association Academic All-Ohio. She also was invited to participate in the District 11 All-Star game.
Tyler, a 6'0 forward, played at Annapolis High School for Coach Danielle Bozeman. Tyler averaged 12.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game during her senior campaign. She caught fire and scored fifteen consecutive points in the second half against rival Southern High School to send the game into overtime. A team captain for her junior and senior seasons, and the leading rebounder since her sophomore year, Tyler was selected to the Capital Gazette All-Star Classic (2012) and the 695 vs. 495 Best of Best All-Star Game (2012). She played AAU for Alana Beard's Future and Coach Keith Chestnut.
Mars Hill concluded last season 7-19 in head coach Sarah Jansen's first season at the helm of the program. This year's schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
