Lions Calm Cobras for Road Victory
Four Mars Hill players finished in double figures as the women's basketball team earned a 70-56 victory over Coker
HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Four Mars Hill women's basketball student-athletes finished in double figures as the Lions earned a 70-56 victory over Coker at the DeLoach Center on Saturday afternoon. Mars Hill improves to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the South Atlantic Conference while Coker drops to 2-6 and 1-4
Camille Glymph led Mars Hill with 25 points, followed by Genice Lane with 12 points, Cadence Wilmoth with 11 points and Paige Chavis with 10. Lane had a game-high 11 rebounds, followed by Glymph with eight and Wilmoth with seven. Chavis dished out four assists while Glymph had four steals.
Coker was led by Tanesha Stenson with 19 points and Kelley Godbout with 16 points. Lakeria Crowder had four steals to lead the Cobras.
Mars Hill raced out to a 9-2 lead before the hosts cut the Lion advantage to two, 14-12, with 12:35 to play in the opening half following a Stenson layup. Kiara Shoats tied the contest at 18 following a pair of free throws with just under nine minutes to play in the frame, but the Lions answered with a 7-2 run for a 25-20 advantage with 6:31 remaining. Coker pulled to within a pair with 5:43 remaining but didn't take the lead as the Lions held a 30-26 halftime advantage.
A Sydney Comer layup with 16:46 to play in the game gave Mars Hill a 38-29 advantage. Coker converted three of their next four possessions into points to pull to within two points (38-36) before the Lions extended their lead back to nine points (47-38) with 12:47 to play. The Cobras went on a 12-0 run for a 51-47 lead with 6:18 to play before a Glymph 3-pointer sparked a 13-2 run for a 60-53 Lion lead with 2:24 left. Coker would get no closer than five points the rest of the way as the Lions outscored the Cobras 10-0 over the final two minutes.
Coker outshot the Lions 33.9 percent to 32.4 percent, but Mars Hill held a 35.3 percent (six-for-17) to 5.6 percent (one-for-18) advantage from behind the 3-point line and converted 95.2 percent of their free throws compared to 65 percent for Coker.
Mars Hill will travel to No. 13 Limestone on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
