Belmont Abbey Defeats Women's Basketball
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team lost 75-62 to Belmont Abbey
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 75-62 to Belmont Abbey in non-conference action in Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon. Belmont Abbey improves to 8-2 overall while Mars Hill falls to 4-6 on the season.
Paige Chavis and Camille Glymph led Mars Hill with 19 points each. Cadence Wilmoth pulled down 12 rebounds for the Lions, with Genice Lane contributing nine rebounds. Glymph dished out a team-high seven assists.
Belmont Abbey was led by Morgan Midkiff with 26 points, followed by McKenzie Owen with 18 points. Owen also led the Crusaders with 10 rebounds.
With the teams even at 10 apiece with just under three minutes gone in the opening half, Mars Hill went on an 8-2 run to take a 18-12 lead following a Lane 3-pointer at the 14:23 mark. Belmont Abbey tied the contest at 22 just under three minutes later before Glymph gave the Lions a 24-22 advantage after sinking a pair of free throws with 8:55 to play. A Glymph 3-pointer gave Mars Hill a 31-28 lead with 4:02 to play before Owen scored five consecutive points to gave the Crusaders a 34-31 lead. With 90 seconds to play, Chavis made a layup to give the Lions a 36-34 lead before Midkiff sank a 3-pointer with 68 seconds to play which gave Belmont Abbey a 37-36 halftime lead.
Belmont Abbey led 45-41 with just under 17 minutes to go in the contest before the Lions pulled to within a point, 47-46, following a Glymph jumper and a Raven Brown free throw with 13:17 remaining. The Crusaders went on a 13-0 run to take a 60-46 lead with 7:03 to play. Mars Hill cut the deficit to six points, 60-54, following a Glymph 3-pointer with six minutes to play but would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Crusaders outshot Mars Hill 44.4 percent to 30.3 percent and held a 83.3 percent to 69.2 percent advantage from behind the charity stripe.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, January 3, hosting South Atlantic Conference foe Queens at 2 p.m.
