Glymph, Lions Defeat Newberry
Camille Glymph scored 15 of the last 17 points for the Mars Hill women’s basketball team as they defeated Newberry 65-61.
MARS HILL, N.C.- Senior guard Camille Glymph scored 15 of the last 17 points for the Mars Hill women's basketball team as they defeated Newberry 65-61 in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday. Mars Hill improves to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the league while Newberry drops to 9-5 and 5-3. Today's win was Mars Hill's third straight over the Wolves in Stanford Arena.
Glymph led the Lions with 25 points, followed by Paige Chavis with 11 points and Kelsey Espinosa with 10. Cadence Wilmoth pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the hosts. Sydney Comer had a game-high three steals.
Haylee Lepaio and Samantha Creed each scored 14 for the Wolves. Lepaio led Newberry with 10 rebounds, followed by Jaya Schultz with nine boards.
Newberry held a 10-5 lead before the Lions evened the contest at 10 with just over 14 minutes to play in the opening half. Mars Hill held a 22-17 lead following a Raven Brown layup with 7:17 to play in the period before the Wolves went on a 7-0 run, tying the game at 22. Newberry held a 31-26 lead with 21 seconds to play in the half before Victoria Leroy sank a 3-pointer to pull Mars Hill to within two, 31-29, at halftime.
Neither team led by more than three points in the early stages of the second half before Jaya Schultz gave the visitors a 49-45 lead after sinking a pair of free throws with 7:52 to play. A Glymph jumper gave Mars Hill the lead for good with 5:45 remaining before Mars Hill held a game-high six point lead (60-54) with 4:01 to play. Newberry cut the Lion lead to a pair following a Lepaio jumper with 1:48 left before a 5-0 run put Mars Hill up 63-58 with 33 seconds left. Nicola Handreck brought Newberry to within two (63-61) with eight seconds remaining thanks to a 3-pointer, but Glymph sank a pair of free throws to secure the win on the next Lion possession. Mars Hill shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the second half after shooting 27 percent in the opening period.
Newberry outshot Mars Hill 41.8 percent to 36.5 percent but committed 18 turnovers compared to 11 by the Lions. Mars Hill scored 14 points off of Newberry turnovers and had 15 second chance points. The Wolves led in the foul count 21-14 and had three starters with four fouls.
Mars Hill will travel to Anderson on Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. contest.
