Late Free Throws Lift Lions to Victory over LMU

MARS HILL, N.C.- Camille Glymph's free throws with 13 seconds remaining capped a late Mars Hill rally as the Lions earned an 85-84 victory over Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action in Stanford Arena on Wednesday. Mars Hill improves to 6-10 on the season and 4-7 in the league while Lincoln Memorial falls to 9-8 and 6-5.
Paige Chavis posted a double-double with a team-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. Kelsey Espinosa scored 20 points, followed by Glymph with 19 and Nicole Marshall with a career-high 11 points. Katie Stevens dished out three assists.
Lincoln Memorial was led by Aisjah Lee with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds and six steals. Shea Coker contributed 17 points while Kiara Rawls scored 16. Lee and Katrina Otteson each had five assists.
Glymph's buckets were the eighth lead change in a second half that featured eight lead changes and six ties. LMU held an 84-81 lead with 41 seconds left following a Coker layup off of a Lion turnover before Stevens brought the Lions to within a point on a layup with 31 seconds to play. Following a missed free throw by the Lady Railsplitters, Glymph was fouled by Megan Pittman and sank both of her free throws to give the Lions a one point advantage. On the ensuing LMU possession Rawls missed a jumper and the Lions survived a last second shot for the victory.
Mars Hill pulled out to an 18-8 lead to start the game and enjoyed a game-high 13 point lead (28-15) with 7:58 to play in the opening half. Lincoln Memorial went on 26-12 run to take a 41-40 lead with 1:42 remaining. A pair of Espinosa free throws followed by a Glymph 3-pointer gave the Lions a 45-41 lead with 40 seconds to play before a Coker jumper and Britney Guy layup beat the buzzer for a 45-all score at halftime.
After neither team enjoyed more than a three point lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half, consecutive Otteson 3-pointers gave the Railsplitters a six point lead (68-62) with just over eight minutes to play. The Lady Railsplitters led by six, 70-64, with 6:53 remaining before Espinosa scored five unanswered points to tie the game at 74 with 4:48 to play. A Rawls layup gave the visitors a four point lead with 3:25 to play before a trio of free throws for the Lions that gave them an 81-80 lead with 1:41 to play.
Both Mars Hill and Lincoln Memorial shot 44.8 percent from the field (30-67 for LMU, 26-58 for MHU), but the Lions outshot the Lady Railsplitters 78.8 percent to 72 percent from the free throw line. Lincoln Memorial made six of 12 3-point attempts, with the Lions converting seven of 18 attempts from behind the arc.
Mars Hill hosts Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday at 2 p.m. in Stanford Arena.
