Wingate Holds Off Women's Basketball
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team lost 72-68 at South Atlantic Conference-leading Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 72-68 at South Atlantic Conference-leading Wingate University on Saturday in Cuddy Arena. Mars Hill falls to 7-12 overall and 5-9 in the league while Wingate improves to 15-6 and 13-1.
Camille Glymph led all scorers with 33 points followed by Paige Chavis with 12 points and Raven Brown with 10 points. Glymph led the Lions with eight rebounds and three steals.
Chantel Dunbar scored 21 points and had 15 rebounds to lead Wingate. Shelby Tricoli added 15 points, with Morgan McGee contributing 12 points. Brittany Hill had a game-high eight assists.
After a McGee jumper tied the game at five with 15:32 to play in the first half, the Lions went on a 10-2 run for a 15-7 lead with just under 14 minutes remaining. Wingate pulled to within a point, 19-18, following a Kelli Bonner 3-pointer before the Lions enjoyed a 33-24 advantage following a Katie Stevens layup with 2:40 to go in the half. Wingate closed out the frame on a 7-0 run as the Lions led 33-31 at halftime.
The Bulldogs took the lead on a McGee jumper at the 17:46 mark of the second half and led by as many as nine points before a Brown layup brought the Lions to within one, 55-54, with six minutes left to play. Wingate answered with a 15-6 run that gave the hosts a 70-60 lead with 92 seconds remaining as Dunbar and McGee combined to score 11 points during that stretch. Glymph scored eight points down the stretch with her 3-pointer with one second remaining serving as the final basket of the game.
Wingate outrebounded Mars Hill 36-33. Mars Hill outshot Wingate 49 percent to 41.2 percent and held shot 80 percent from the charity stripe compared to 50 percent for Wingate.
Mars Hill travels to Brevard on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
