Women's Basketball Completes Season Sweep of Coker
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team used a 19-0 run in the second half to pull away from Coker as the Lions claimed a 73-53 win.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team used a 19-0 run in the second half to pull away from Coker as the Lions claimed a 73-53 win in Stanford Arena on Saturday. Mars Hill improves to 8-13 overall and 6-10 in the South Atlantic Conference while Coker drops to 9-13 and 5-11.
Camille Glymph scored 28 points to lead the Lions. Kelsey Espinosa posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, eight coming on defense. Cadence Wilmoth scored 12 points. Genice Lane had a game-high four steals.
Tanesha Stenson had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Hailey Yohn with 11 points to lead Coker.
After the teams traded the first four points, Coker went on a 12-3 run for a 16-7 lead following a Yohn 3-pointer with 10:37 to play in the first half. Mars Hill responded as a Wilmoth jumper began 15-6 run that saw the Lions even the contest at 22 after an Espinosa bucket with 5:32 remaining before the break. A Paige Chavis layup gave Mars Hill a 24-22 advantage as the Lions would hold a 30-24 lead at halftime.
Following a Glymph 3-pointer that gave Mars Hill a 35-26 lead with just under 18 minutes to go in the game, a Yohn 3-pointer and Stenson layup brought the Cobras back to within four, 35-31, at the 16:38 mark. Stenson tied the game at 44 with a layup with 10:28 to go before the teams traded buckets to remain deadlocked at 46. Espinosa made the first of two free throws with 8:17 to play to begin the decisive 19-0 run as the Lions led 65-46 with 3:52 remaining following a pair of Wilmoth free throws. A Stenson layup and Godbout 3-pointer cut the Lion lead to 14 with 3:28 to play, but the Cobras would get no closer the rest of the way.
Mars Hill outrebounded Coker 42-37 and outshot the Cobras 48.3 percent to 32.9 percent. The Lions converted 15 Coker turnovers into 17 points.
Mars Hill hosts league-leading Anderson on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The initial meeting between the teams resulted in a 94-85 overtime victory for the Trojans despite a career-high 39 points from Glymph.
