Women's Basketball Falls to Anderson
Anderson claimed a 71-58 victory in Stanford Arena on Wednesday.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 71-58 to Anderson in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday in Stanford Arena. Mars Hill drops to 8-14 overall and 6-11 in the league while Anderson improves to 18-3 and 15-2.
Camille Glymph scored 25 points to lead the Lions, followed by Kelsey Espinosa with 12 and Cadence Wilmoth with 10 points. Paige Chavis led the Lions with six rebounds.
Jasmine Franklin scored 22 points to lead the visitors, followed by Sierra Simpson with 14 points, Lesley Woods with 12 points and Alexis Dillard with 11. Jennifer Monroe pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Anderson scored the first six points of the game before an Espinosa 3-pointer brought the Lions to within one, 6-5, with 17:15 to play in the frame. The Trojans pulled ahead to a 17-8 advantage with just under 13 minutes to play in the half and led 21-11 at the midpoint of the opening period. Mars Hill pulled to within eight points, 21-13, on a Nicole Marshall layup but the Trojans went on a 9-4 run for a 30-17 advantage with 2:26 to go in the half following a Monroe layup. A Glymph 3-pointer with 15 seconds left sent the Lions into halftime down 38-27.
The Trojans held a 48-33 lead at the 16:16 mark before Mars Hill scored six unanswered points to pull within nine, 48-39, following a Glymph 3-pointer with 12:44 to go. Anderson responded by extending their lead to a game-high 18 points (63-45) with 6:49 remaining. With 3:42 to play, Glymph was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer and made her free throws to bring the Lions to within 11 (67-56), but the Lions would get no closer the rest of the way.
Anderson outshot Mars Hill 49.1 percent to 39.6 percent with both teams each recording 34 rebounds. The Trojans scored 40 of their 71 points in the paint.
Mars Hill travels to Queens on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
