Women's Basketball Falls to Anderson in SAC Tournament
The Mars Hill women’s basketball team lost 67-52 at Anderson in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament
ANDERSON, S.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 67-52 at Anderson in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Abney Athletic Center on Wednesday. Anderson improves to 24-3 overall while Mars Hill concludes the 2014-15 season with an 11-17 record.
Camille Glymph led Mars Hill with 19 points, followed by Kelsey Espinosa and Cadence Wilmoth with nine points each. Genice Lane pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and a season-high five steals.
Anderson had three players finish in double figures, led by Lesley Woods with 18 points. Woods went 6-for-11 from behind the arc. Jasmine Charles scored 12 points, followed by Katie Davis with 10 points. Franklin led the Trojans with eight rebounds.
Anderson led 9-2 at the first media timeout before the Lions pulled to within three points after layups from Glymph and Espinosa. The Trojans responded with a 10-0 run for a 16-6 lead, with a pair of Espinosa jumpers bringing the Lions to within six (16-10) at the 11:53 mark. Anderson took a 33-16 lead with 6:31 remaining before the Lions finished the frame on a 12-2 run to head into halftime down 35-26. The Trojans were four-of-six from behind the arc in the opening stanza.
Mars Hill opened the second half with buckets from Glymph and Chavis to pull within five (35-30) at the 18:37 mark. A pair of Franklin free throws pushed the Trojan lead back to double digits, 43-33, with just under 16 minutes remaining. An Espinosa layup and Wilmoth free throw cut the Lion deficit to seven points (43-36) with 14:36 to go before a Woods 3-pointer gave the Trojans a 48-36 lead with 12:11 remaining. Wilmoth's layup with 10:30 remaining brought the Lions to within an eighth point deficit (48-40), but Anderson went on a 13-4 run to tie a game-high 17 point lead with 3:36 remaining. A pair of Chavis layups brought the Lions to within 12, 62-50, with 1:31 remaining but the Lions weren't able to get any closer as the Trojans made free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Mars Hill committed 22 turnovers that resulted in 33 Anderson points. Both teams pulled down 38 rebounds.
