Mars Hill downed 72-42 by Trojans

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's basketball lost to Anderson 72-42 in Stanford Arena Wednesday night. Cierra Hampton had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Anderson stormed out to a 17-0 run in the first 3:26 of the contest. Alexy Mollenhauer had eight of the Trojans' points. Jewel Walston's jumper broke the streak momentarily, but the Trojans roared back with another six straight points. Valeriya Pokorovskaya would hit a 3-pointer to snap the run with 19 seconds left in the first period. Mars Hill shot 2-for-12 in the opening 10 minutes compared to Anderson's 10-of-17.
The Lions showed fight in the second frame, outscoring Anderson 14-11 with Mariah Johnson and Alexus Grubbs each recording four points in the period. The duo combined for the first five points of the half to pull within 15 points. A bucket by Erika Martin slowed the momentum Mars Hill was creating. Following the Anderson strike, the Lions took the next four points to trail 27-14 with just under five minutes remaining in the half. The teams would close out the half scoring five points each.
Walston and Cierra Hampton joined Grubbs and Johnson as the leading scorers of the half, each with four points. Hampton pulled down seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes to lead all players. Mollenhauer's eight points paced the Trojans' offense followed by Ace Easter's five. Martin collected five rebounds.
Mars Hill came out of the half scoring six of the first eight points to cut the deficit to 10, the closest they would be for the remainder of the contest. Anderson answered back with a 13-0 run to balloon the lead back to 23 points. Easter had five points followed by Alexis Dillard's four. The Lions trailed 57-29 entering the final frame.
The Lions were outscored 15-13 in the fourth period. The 72-42 defeat marks their 23rd consecutive loss.
Pokrovskaya finished the game with 10 points and three assists. Wlason had 10 rebounds to go along with her eight points. Mollenhauer and Easter each topped the Anderson scoresheet with 13 points. Martin pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the victory.
Mars Hill falls to 1-24 (0-17 SAC) as Anderson improves to 17-8 (11-6 SAC).
The Lions hit the road Saturday, February 17 when they head to Charlotte to take on Queens. Action is slated to start 2 p.m.
