Royals late push downs Mars Hill
The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-11, 0-8 SAC) were defeated by a score of 62-56 to the visiting Royals of Queens University (6-9, 1-8 SAC) Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-11, 0-8 SAC) were defeated by a score of 62-56 to the visiting Royals of Queens University (6-9, 1-8 SAC) Saturday afternoon inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Tied 54-54 heading into the final 4:25 of play, the Royals put together an 8-0 run to seal their first South Atlantic Conference win of the year. The run was started from a Jaymi Golden three-pointer with 4:06 left in regulation. Golden ended the contest with 11 points.
The Lions controlled the first quarter, shooting over 40 percent from the floor with the trio of Shayla Smith, Brooke Vilcinskas and Tatum Boggs each scoring four points. In a tighter played second quarter, Mars Hill entered the half with a five point advantage, up 31-26. Mariah Johnson scored seven of her 12 points in the frame.
After the first 20 minutes of action, Queens' Cheyenne Logan led all players with eight points. Adepoju had seven rebounds. Boggs, Johnson and Baylea Loven each had seven for Mars Hill.
Queens, after giving up the first two points in the third quarter, went on an 11-0 run that saw them pull ahead by four. They would further increase their lead throughout the half until a late 6-1 run by the Lions trimmed the deficit to three entering the final ten minutes of play.
Adepoju led all players with 18 points and nine rebounds. Logan ended the contest with 10 points for Queens. Smith paced the Lions offense with 14 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds.
Mars Hill wraps up their three-game homestand on Monday, January 21st versus Coker. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
