Mars Hill falls to Wingate on road
The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-20, 0-16 SAC) was defeated by Wingate (18-6, 13-4 SAC) by a score of 95-52 Saturday afternoon on the road.
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-20, 0-16 SAC) was defeated by Wingate (18-6, 13-4 SAC) by a score of 95-52 Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 run in the first 3:34 of the contest. They built their lead to as many as 16 when Morgan Simmons hit a three-pointer with 1:33 left in the first frame. The Lions entered the second quarter trailing 22-7.
Wingate once again started fast in the second, going on a 16-4 run to go up by 27 with under six minutes remaining in the half. Jordan Quick had seven points in the stretch. Mars Hill chip into the lead over the next 1:10, going on a 5-0 run to pull within 22, however, Wingate responded with a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 28 points with 2:26 left in the half.
Quick led all players with 11 points in the first half, going 4-of-5 from the field. Caroline Averette added seven for the Bulldogs. Mariah Johnson led the Lions with five points followed by Alexis Pardue and Baylea Loven's four apiece.
The Lions were outscored 28-14 in the third quarter with Pardue's four points lead the way offensively. Courtney Robinson led all players with eight points in the stanza. Despite cutting the lead down to 21, Mars Hill conceded 10 straight points to the Bulldogs to fall behind by 31 with 7:20 left in the third. Wingate closed the third with a 73-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Wingate continued to push the pace offensively, building their lead throughout the quarter to end the contest with the 95-52 result. Tatum Boggs, in the fourth quarter, led all players with nine points.
Averette led all players with 15 points. Jo Snow added 12 while Quick finished the contest with 11 points on the day. Boggs led the Lions with 14 points, going 4-of-7 from the floor. Pardue ended the contest with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Lions travel to Harrogate, Tennessee on Wednesday, February 20th to take on Lincoln Memorial. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
