Women’s Soccer defeats Catawba in 2OT
SALISBURY, N.C. - Mars Hill's Catherine Watkins-Banks scored her third goal of the season in the 102nd minute of double overtime to lift the Lions to a 2-1 victory over Catawba.
Mars Hill (5-3-1, 1-1) notched its first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season in dramatic fashion. Lindsey Ingwersen gave the Lions a 1-0 first-half lead in the 30th minute. Watkins-Banks found the freshman midfielder who beat Catawba (1-6, 0-1) goalkeeper Lindsay Webster from 10 yards out for her second goal in 2011.
The home team tied the game in the second half. In the 77th minute, Karen Presnell fed Erinn Westcoat the ball, and Westcoat broke through the Lion defense to score her second goal of the season, putting the ball in the left corner of the net past Mars Hill goalkeeper Chelsea Parker.
Watkins-Banks broke the tie for good in the second overtime period. The forward found the back of the net from 12 yards out.
Parker played the entire match for the Lions and recorded four saves. Webster went the distance for Catawba and made one save.
Catawba outshot Mars Hill, 13-6, and held an edge in corner kicks, 9-3. The Lions host Newberry on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
