Women's Soccer Loses to Catawba
The Lions’ women’s soccer team lost their season finale, 4-2 to the Catawba Indians Friday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' women's soccer team lost their season finale, 4-2 to the Catawba Indians Friday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill ends the 2014 season, 0-16-1 overall and 0-11 in the South Atlantic Conference. Catawba improved to 10-6-2 on the year, 6-4-1 in the league.
Hannah Cruse scored the first goal of the match at the 27:56 mark on a header from a corner kick. The ball was sent in by Kiersten Peck. Emily Rhea tied the match at 1-all in the 35th minute, scoring her first career goal as a Lion, finding the back of the net from 20 yards out. The goal was assisted by Abby Spitler. The team carried that score into the locker rooms at the intermission.
Catawba reeled off three unanswered goals in the second frame to seal the win over the Lions. Kate Weisner scored off a long pass from Alex Hulsey to make the score 2-1 in the 64th minute. Nine minutes later (72:27) Peck scored off a pass from Cruse. Weisner then scored her second goal of the match at the 79:08 mark on a through ball from Hulsey. Hannah Russell trimmed the Lions' deficit to 4-2 at the 86:25 mark scoring from 12 yards away off a pass from Heather Bittle to make the final tally, 4-2 in favor of the Indians.
Prior to the contest, MHU recognized their six senior players. Lindsey Ingwersen, Grace Lancaster, Blair Long, Haley Peterson, Catherine Watkins-Banks and Rachel Weber played their final match for the Lions.
