Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to King
The Mars Hill women’s soccer team dropped their season and home opener 4-2 to visiting King University Thursday night.

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's soccer team dropped their season and home opener 4-2 to visiting King University Thursday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. It was the season opener for the Tornado as well.
Rachel Thorpe scored the first goal of the match off a rebound at the 4:20 mark off a rebound to give King a 1-0 lead. The ball was sent in by McKenzie Clarke.
Paige Thompson scored on a breakaway in the 14th minute to tie the match at 1-all. The goal was assisted by Rachel Blong.
Breona Tate gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage at the 23:41 mark off a quick cross from Thompson. Miranda Smith tied the contest once again when she found the back of the net from around 15 yards out in the 25th minute.
Kendyl Baird gave King the lead (3-2) when she scored off a cross in the 28th minute from a pass by Hulda Sigurdardottir. Around four minutes later (31:04), Sigurdardottir added a goal to end the scoring in the half. The goal was assisted by Smith. The teams went into halftime with King leading, 4-2.
The second half of play would not see any scoring. King outshot the Lions, 27-14. Corner kicks were even at two apiece. Maslyn Greene played all 90 minutes in goal for the Lions and made 12 saves. Nicole Dagher played the first 25:57 in the net for King and made five saves. Olivia Drake played the final 64:03 and made three saves.
Mars Hill will play at Shorter University on Saturday, September 5. Match time is set for a 2 p.m. start.
