SALISBURY, N.C.- A late rally by the Mars Hill women's soccer team fell just short as the Lions dropped a 3-2 South Atlantic Conference match to Catawba on Saturday. Catawba improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league play while the Lions fall to 0-6 and 0-2.
The Indians got on the board just under two minutes into the match as Hannah Cruse scored her first goal of the season. Mars Hill got the equalizer at the 26:14 mark as Rachel Blong took a pass off of a Hannah Russell corner kick and fired it into the net for her first goal of the season. The teams were tied at 1 after 45 minutes of action
Catawba took a 2-1 lead following a goal from Emily Davis at 52:01. The Indians would stretch their lead to 3-1 thanks to a Kristina Hoff goal at 66:23.
Breona Tate scored her fourth goal of the season with 13 seconds to play but the Lions would run out of time as the Indians prevailed 3-2.
Catawba outshot Mars Hill 17-8 and held a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Angela Pawlowski made nine saves, while Maslyn Green made five saves.
Mars Hill returns home on Wednesday, hosting Carson-Newman at 5 p.m.
