SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-3) gave up a late goal to Francis Marion (2-1) Friday evening in the Catawba Classic, falling by a score of 1-0.
The Lions weathered the Patriots' storm in the first half with goalkeeper Tonje Jorgenssen making three saves in the first frame. Mars Hill's Sanne Martinsen had the lone shot in the first 45 minutes.
Both teams traded chances in the second half until a late corner kick for Francis Marion turned the tides. With just over 12 minutes left in regulation, Emma Hall's corner kick found its way to the head of Dayle McEwen. McEwen directed the ball inside the left post past Mars Hill goalkeeper Clare Witt for the only score in the contest.
Mars Hill pressured late, however, were unable to get clean shots off on Rachel Hennenkamp who preserved the shutout.
The Lions take to the field as part of the Catawba Classic on Sunday, September 9 when they take on Barton. The tilt is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
