JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (2-10-0, 1-6-0 SAC) were defeated 4-1 by the No. 20 ranked Carson-Newman (9-3-0, 7-1-0 SAC) on the road Wednesday evening.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first half. Kanani Thomas scored her first goal of the season, lofting the ball behind goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns in the 24' minute. Mars Hill, despite being outshot 13-2 in the half, would carry the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Carson-Newman responded in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals, including three in a span of 2:19. Lara Hallgrimsdottir, in the 59' minute, converted a penalty kick to tie the game. Just shy of a minute later, Kristina Markfort put the Eagles up 2-1 with her second of the year. Over a minute and a half later, Emilee Futrell scored her eighth goal of the campaign.
The Eagles added an insurance marker with 11 minutes remaining off the boot of Averi Williams.
Carson-Newman outshot the Lions 30-4 with 11 going on net. Tonje Jorgensen made seven saves in the contest.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, October 20th when they take on Tusculum. The road contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
