MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (0-1) was defeated by Young Harris (1-0) by a score of 4-0 in their 2025 season opener Thursday evening.
After a near two-hour weather delay due to thunderstorms in the area, the home opener kicked off with the Lions holding a 4-3 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes of play.
Kayleigh Palmer saved all three shots she saw in the half, including a partial breakaway off the foot of Scarlett Hirschy.
In the second, Young Harris found the back of the net four times, with Betsy Bu's first of the season being the catalyst for the offense in the 55th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Darfur Martinez's long shot doubled up the Lions.
Lauren Gauthier netted two goals in the final 18 minutes of play to seal the victory. Young Harris outshot Mars Hill 8-0 in the half.
Both Avery Brechbiel and Samantha Swinson's lone shot attempts were on target.
Mars Hill hosts Glenville State inside Meares Stadium at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 7.
