Spurgeon leads Lions offense in SAC Quarterfinal
The Mars Hill volleyball team (16-13, 10-10 SAC) fell in four sets to the No. 2 seed Anderson Trojans (27-4, 17-3 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal action Tuesday night.
ANDERSON, S.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (16-13, 10-10 SAC) fell in four sets to the No. 2 seed Anderson Trojans (27-4, 17-3 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal action Tuesday night.
The Trojans took the first set by a score of 25-18, led by Hannah Worsham's five kills. Anderson hit .179 to the Lions .000. Both Sarah Goddard and Dayanna Barbosa had two kills in the frame while Ully Martins led all players with nine digs in the first set.
Trailing 17-9 in the second set, the Lions would claw back into the second set, winning 15 of the next 22 points to tie the game at 24-all late in the frame. Goddard recorded an ace and one kill in the run while Maddie Spurgeon and Elizabeth Kaeser each had two kills during that span. The teams battled down the stretch, but the Trojans outlasted the Lions push, winning the second set 26-24. Spurgeon recorded five of her team-high 13 kills in the frame. Jayln Knight led the Trojans with six kills on 19 attempts.
Mars Hill roared back into the contest, taking the third set by a score of 25-21. Trailing 15-13, Mars Hill went on a five point run, including four attack errors from the Trojans, to take an 18-15 lead. Anderson would answer back moments later with a five point run of their own, regaining the lead, 21-20. The Lions, ever resilient, responded with another five point run to force a fourth set.
Anderson would close out the contest, hitting .279 in the fourth set and would never trail. Liliana Kinder knocked down six of her game-high 16 kills in the final frame. Spurgeon led the Lions with four kills in the set.
Four Trojans had double-digit kills. Kinder led the way with 16, followed by Wilhelm's 13, Regan Duty's 12 and Knight's 11 on the night. Emily Conlin led all players with 47 assists while she, along with Meghan DeVaux, each had a team-high 25 digs.
Spurgeon racked up 13 kills on the night and added two digs and one block. She hit a game-high .324. Kaeser recorded 17 digs, nine kills and six blocks, three of which were solo. Goddard had 28 digs, five kills and three aces. Sara Pasour led the Lions with 18 assists and Martins led all players with 30 digs.
The Lions finish the 2018 campaign with a 16-13 overall record.
