Lions hold off Cavaliers on road

WISE, Va. - The Mars Hill football team (6-2, 6-1 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (2-7, 1-6 SAC) by a score of 20-16 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Lions led 3-0 after the first quarter as Andre Labat hit a 30-yard field goal.
In the second, Mars Hill upped their lead to 10 as Ty Snelson punched it in from two-yards out. With 2:27 remaining in the half, Juwan Dent scored from one-yard out to send the Cavaliers into the half trailing by three.
Jervon Newton rebuilt the Mars Hill 10-point lead with a 26-yard rush with his 10th rushing touchdown of the year with 4:37 remaining in the third. With less than two minutes in the frame, Kellan Dalton hit the first of his three field goals on the afternoon, a 29-yard attempt.
Dalton hit a 33-yard and a 22-yard kick in the fourth, closing the deficit to one, 17-16, with 6:11 left in the contest.
Labat netted his second field goal of the afternoon, a 31-yard attempt with 3:03 left in the game, securing the four-point win for the Lions and their fourth straight win.
UVA Wise outgained the Lions 323-310 on the day, amassing 223 in the air.
Jimmy Urzua threw for 155 yards while Newton ran for 151 and one score. Malik Laurent led the Lions with five receptions for 65 yards. Landon Honeycutt led all players with 13 tackles with one sack for eight yards. Daquan Carter collected 10 tackles while Tristan Rankin and Monroe Sanderson each reeled in an interception.
The Lions return home to Meares Stadium on Saturday, November 5 when they host Tusculum on Senior Day to determine the winner of the South Atlantic Conference Mountain Division. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
