SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill (1-10, 0-5 SAC) men's lacrosse team fell to Catawba (5-5, 3-2 SAC), 11-9, in a tightly contested South Atlantic Conference game Tuesday evening.
Battling their way back from a three-goal deficit at the start of the third quarter, the Lions would tie the game at eight at the 4:06 mark of the fourth quarter when Parker Beaudry netted his second of the game.
However, three straight goals from Catawba reestablished the lead and secured the win for the Indians. Two tallies from Dalton Cook and one from Joe Barber, his hat-trick goal, thwarted the Mars Hill comeback bid. Jake Trafton, with 1:39 left in the contest, pulled the game within two, but ultimately, it was not enough for the Lions to rally back.
The Indians scored the first three goals of the game and they proved to be enough of a cushion against the persistent Lions squad. Justin Warnock netted the first two goals followed by a man-up goal from Chase Scott. With 2:31 remaining in the opening quarter, Beaudry's man-up goal put the Lions on the board.
Over the next three quarters, both teams would match the other's output. Catawba bookended the second quarter with goals from Cole Fanzo and Isaiah Welch. Sandwiched between their markers were goals from Alex Lipsky and Trafton; both goals with the man-advantage. Lipsky (1g, 1a) figured in on both goals in the frame.
Joe Barber, two minutes into the second half, gave Catawba a three goal edge, but two straight goals from Spencer Andrews and Connor Fernandes pulled the Lions within one with 7:03 left in the third quarter. Barber struck once again at 9:12 to keep the lead for the Indians, but answering less than two minutes later was Andrews with his second goal of the contest. With 2:15 left in the quarter, Liam Lynch's man-up goal gave the Indians' a two goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Mars Hill clawed their way back into the game with two goals in the opening 4:06 to tie the game for the first time since the opening minutes of the contest. Josh Bryers and Beaudry scored the Lions' goals to tie the game at eight.
Andrews (2g, 1a), Lipsky (1g, 2a) and Dima Ferreira (3a) led the Lions with three points each. Barber (3g, 2a) paced the Catawba offense with five points. Cook (2g), Warnock (2g) and Scott (1g, 1a) each had two points.
Ryan Kearney made 14 saves in the losing effort. Hunter Cheuvront made two saves in 29:08 of action for the win.
The Lions travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to square off against Queens on Saturday, April 7. Faceoff is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
