Lions downed by Indians in SAC action
The Mars Hill men’s lacrosse team (3-7, 0-5 SAC) was defeated by Catawba (8-2, 5-0 SAC) by a score of 16-4 inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (3-7, 0-5 SAC) was defeated by Catawba (8-2, 5-0 SAC) by a score of 16-4 inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Indians held a 4-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play. Christian Norrie opened the scoring with 1:47 played in the frame and less than a minute later, Cole Fanzo recorded his first of the quarter. With under nine minutes remaining in the first, Joe Barber extended the Catawba lead to 3-0. Mars Hill's Parker Beaudry scored the lone goal of the opening stanza with his 15th of the year. Fanzo, with 29 seconds remaining, netted the fourth Catawba goal.
Catawba rolled the momentum over into the second, scoring the first four goals of the frame. Fanzo and Norrie scored twice while Tony Bellotte netted his 29th on the year. With 3:31 left in the half, Zac Carrigan scored the Lions' second goal of the half and his 23rd of the season.
The third quarter saw the Indians score five straight goals to head into the final 15 minutes of play up 14-2. Robert Morrison collected two assists in the stanza. Both teams in the fourth traded two goals apiece. Fanzo netted both tallies for Catawba while Samuel Wittman scored his first career goals with 10:49 to play. Carrigan scored his second of the day just over five minutes later.
Fanzo ended the game with seven goals while Trevor Bellotte had five points (1g, 4 a) on the day. Carrigan (2g) and Tremain Hill (2a) each had two points for Mars Hill.
Kevin Geiger earned the win for Catawba, making eight saves while Joel Borman was credited with the loss.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, April 3rd when they take on North Greenville in non-conference play. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
