Pioneers outlast charging Lions
The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-2, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Tusculum (3-0, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 9-7 Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference play.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (2-2, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Tusculum (3-0, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 9-7 Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference play.
Tusculum scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, both from Nate Raymond to take the 8-6 lead with 10:20 remaining in the contest. Braden Hoskyn scored his second of the contest to pull within one with under seven to play. Brandon Elam, 37 seconds later, added the insurance marker for the Pioneers.
The first quarter saw the teams tied at two. Tristan Kirkham opened the scoring for the Pioneers, but Mars Hill answered with goals from Zac Carrigan and Trevor Kennedy. With 2:46 left in the stanza, Josh Pickford knotted the game up off of an assist from Kirkham.
The Lions trailed 3-2 just 30 seconds into the half, but scored the final two goals of the second from the sticks of Justin Lundy and Hoskyn. Brandon Beland picked up his second assist of the night on Hoskyn's tally.
Tusculum outscored Mars Hill 3-2 in the third as Kirkham scored twice to complete the hat-trick. Lundy scored his second of the contest to tie the game at five and Joey Baumgardt put Mars Hill up 6-5 with 4:41 left in the frame.
Kirkham led all players with four points (3g, 1a) while Lundy led the Lions with three (2g, 1a). Hoskyn netted two and Carrigan finished with a goal and an assist.
Ross Geiger stopped 10 shots for the win while Steven Smith made 15 saves in the loss.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, February 27 when they face Emmanuel. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
