BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (1-0) opened their 2022 campaign with a 2-0 win over No. 14 Chowan (0-1) Thursday evening on the road as part of the Lees-McRae Shope Classic.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Lions outshoot Chowan 10-5, the Mars Hill offense continued to press, breaking through in the 47th minute. Off of a set play, David Straube scored his first goal as a Lion, knocking the ball out of the air with his left foot to put the Lions up 1-0.
With 1:08 remaining in the contest, Peter Plougmand sealed the victory with an individual effort that saw the preseason All-SAC First Team selection cut inside the defender as the ball was played out, stride to the goal line, and from a near impossible angle, roof the ball just inside the near post and crossbar.
Mars Hill outshot the Hawks 18-9 with Brennan Whalen making four saves for the shutout.
The Lions return to the pitch on Saturday, August 27 when they take on Lees-McRae to close out their play at the Lees-McRae Shope Classic. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
