MARS HILL, N.C. – Scott Long has been promoted to head softball coach, as announced by Director of Athletics Rick Baker. His duties are effective immediately.
"I first would like to give God the glory for giving me a home here at Mars Hill," Long said. "The Mars Hill family has been unbelievably kind and generous to me since I have arrived here. President Floyd's commitment to athletics and the players has been exciting to see and I am so energized to see what's to come."
Christine Roser, announced as head coach in 2019, hired Long as assistant coach. She has stepped down to pursue other career opportunities.
Long began his coaching career in 1999 and brings over 20 years of experience to Mars Hill. He joined the Lions after spending one season as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University. While at Gardner-Webb, Long helped the team finish in the top two in several statistical categories in the Big South Conference including, but not limited to, batting average, doubles, triples, and runs scored.
"Coach Long has been an excellent addition to our softball program over the last couple of years," Baker stated. "He brings a wealth of softball knowledge, leadership skills, and is a solid recruiter. I have enjoyed working with Coach Long the last two seasons and he has been a great addition to the Mars Hill family."
Responsible for pitching and hitting development, Long coached the new single-season strikeout record holder as well as the Big South Conference's Freshman of the Year.
Prior to coaching at Gardner-Webb, Long served as head coach at Salem College from 2010-2018, amassing a 141-127-2 record. The team won the Great South Atlantic Tournament back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016 and also won the USA South West Division Regular Season Championship in 2017 and 2018. Long was named Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2018. Also in 2016, Long coached the Player, Pitcher and Freshman of the Year.
"I am so thankful to Rick Baker and the athletic administration for trusting me with the future success of the Mars Hill softball program," Long added.
"I am proud to call Mars Hill home and I will give all my commitment, love, and devotion to its success."
