Johnson scores 21 in loss to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-17, 0-13 SAC) fell by a score of 109-49 on the road against Carson-Newman (17-5, 10-4 SAC) Wednesday evening.
The Eagles opened the contest on a 16-0 run over the first 3:23 of the first quarter. Kayla Marosites hit two three-pointers in the run while Addison Byrd added five points. Mars Hill, following a timeout, scored seven of the next 10 points before Carson-Newman reeled off a 10-0 run to hold a 29-7 lead with less than two minutes to play in the opening frame. Marosites and Haris Price each had 10 points in the 34-11 stanza.
The teams played a tighter second quarter with the Eagles outscoring Mars Hill 21-18 entering the half. Mariah Johnson scored 13 of her team-high 21 points in the frame, going 3-of-6 from the floor and hitting all seven free throw opportunities. Marosites and Madison Bunch each had six to lead the Eagles in the second quarter that saw Carson-Newman up 55-29 entering the second half of play.
Carson-Newman would go on to outscore the Lions 54-20 in the final 20 minutes of play. The Eagles opened the half on a 12-0 run and scored 17 of the first 21 points in the quarter to go up 72-33 with 6:11 remaining in the frame. Of the 32 Eagles' points scored, Price notched 14, going 5-of-7 from the floor, including four three-pointers. Johnson led the Lions with four points in the third.
The Lions scored five of the first eight points in the final quarter of play, but would be outscored 22-10 in the frame. Selby Baughman and Alexis Pardue each had three points for the Lions in the stanza. Byrd led all players with six.
Price led all players with 28 points and six assists, hitting six three-pointers on the night. Byrd and Marosites ended the contest with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Johnson racked up a team-high five assists, while Pardue led the team with eight rebounds.
Mars Hill returns to Stanford Arena on Saturday, February 9th when they host Catawba. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
