Boggs shines on Senior Day, Lions rout Queens
Senior Tatum Boggs led the Mars Hill women's basketball team (4-24, 2-20) to a dominant 104-70 victory over Queens (5-23, 4-18 SAC) in their 2019-20 season finale inside Chambers Gymnasium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - Senior Tatum Boggs led the Mars Hill women's basketball team (4-24, 2-20) to a dominant 104-70 victory over Queens (5-23, 4-18 SAC) in their 2019-20 season finale inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Boggs, in her final game, recorded a career-high 27 points, draining four three-pointers, and going a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The Lions' offense could not be stopped in the opening 10 minutes of play, putting 31 points, going 11-of-16 from the floor, including three three-pointers. Mars Hill opened the contest on an 11-0 run. Following two Royals' free throws, the Mars Hill momentum continued rolling, responding with a 9-2 run to lead 20-4 with just over three minutes left in the stanza. The Lions closed out the frame on an 11-6 run to lead by 21 entering the second. Boggs recorded 14 points in the 10 minutes followed by Alexis Pardue's 10.
Mars Hill continued their excellent shooting, going 50 percent from the floor and outscoring Queens by a margin of 24-11. A more balanced scoring attack saw Pardue, Selby Baughman and De'Ja Marshall each record four points while the duo of Boggs and Lahaina Bell netted three. Kristian Eanes led Queens with six points in the frame.
The Lions carried a 34-point lead into the second half where both teams put on offensive displays. The Royals outscored Mars Hill 28-25 in the third as they converted on 43 percent of their shots. Eanes once again did the heavy lifting for the Royals, recording 13 points, going 5-of-7 from the floor. Tia McMillian dropped seven in seven minutes. Boggs' hot hand saw the senior lead the Lions with seven points in the quarter followed by six apiece from Pardue and Marshall.
Late in the fourth quarter, on Hannah Chandler's second three-pointer of the frame, the Lions eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Chandler posted 13 of the Lions' 24 fourth quarter points, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.
Eanes led the Royals with 23 points while collecting three steals. Taylor Stevens added 14 followed by Caitlyn Moore's 12.
Pardue followed her career-high performance versus Lenoir-Rhyne with her second consecutive 20-point contest, recording 24 and pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Chandler posted 18 while Marshall recorded 17 and eight rebounds.
Boggs led all players with 27 in her final contest with the Lions, collecting six rebounds and assisting on two baskets in a masterful, all-around performance. She was honored prior to tipoff for her contributions to the program over her two years.
The Lions conclude the 2019-20 season with a record of 4-24 (2-20 SAC).
