Baseball Splits with Millersville
The Lions’ baseball team split a double-header with Millersville Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' baseball team split a double-header with Millersville Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill improved to 8-5 overall while the Marauders fell to 6-3 on the season.
Game 1: MU 15, MHU 2
Shomarii Thomas led MHU at the plate going 1-2 with a RBI. Matt Honeycutt was 1-3 with a run scored while Travis Owens was 1-1. Alec Bivins suffered the loss (2-2) on the mound for the Lions.
Aaron Taylor was 1-1 with a triple and three RBI to pace Millersville offensively. Chas McCormick went 3-5 with two RBI while Ted Williams was 2-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. Eli Nabholz obtained the win (3-0) throwing four innings allowing just one earned run.
A single by Thomas in the second inning plated Honeycutt to give Mars Hill a 1-0 lead. Millersville then scored three runs on five hits in the third inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Dan Neff.
Millersville then scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning on three hits and one Lion error. McCormick hit a two-RBI single in the at-bat.
After MHU added a single run in the bottom half of the inning, the Marauders scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 10-2. Millersville put the game away in their last at-bat scoring five runs on two hits and one Lion miscue to make the final tally 15-2 in favor of the visitors.
Game 2: MHU 6, MU 5
Hunter Merrill went 3-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Lions at the plate. Thomas was 2-3 with two runs scored and a homerun. Tom Mastrodonato picked up the win (1-0) on the mound pitching the final three innings in relief. He scattered four hits while striking out two batters.
Neff and Mitch Stolzfus led the Marauders offensively with two hits apiece. Stolzfus recorded a pair of RBI. Kyle Peterson took the loss (1-1) on the mound for Millersville.
A sacrifice fly by Ben Snyder drove in McCormick that gave Millersville a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Merrill tied the contest at 1-all in the Lions first at-bat on a wild pitch.
Merrill then singled through the right side in the second frame to plate Lance Edwards and Thomas to give MHU a 3-1 advantage. A sacrifice fly by Cole Friese sent Jimmy Cain to the plate to bring Millersville within one run (3-2) of the Lions.
A leadoff homerun by Thomas started the Lions' fourth at-bat and then Daniel Vitello singled to drive in Edwards to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Lions. Unfortunately, Millersville scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning on four hits and one Lions error to knot the contest at 5-5. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Edwards singled to send Devin Mangum to the plate for the game winning score.
The team will complete the four-game series tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 12:30 p.m.
