Football Loses Season Finale
Mars Hill’s football team lost to Newberry 28-0 in their season finale Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Mars Hill's football team lost to Newberry 28-0 in their season finale Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. The Lions end the 2017 campaign 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Wolves improved to 5-6 on the season, 3-4 in the SAC.
Turnovers plagued the Lions in the loss. Newberry scored 21 of their 28 points directly off of Mars Hill miscues.
Elijah Jett rushed for 80 yards on 14 carries averaging 5.7 yards per run. Craig Rucker caught four passes for 36 yards. Chris Leamon recorded a game high 13 tackles (11 solo) and four tackles-for-loss. Anthony Phillips followed with nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and one tackle-for-loss. Anthony McGill and Jerjuan Edwards tallied seven tackles apiece in the game.
Austin Barnes and Baptiste Staggers led the Wolves offensively rushing for 118 and 102 yards in the contest, respectively. Barnes scored twice while Staggers crossed the goal line once. Darryl Foster led the Wolves defense with eight tackles followed by Will Elm with five tackles and an interception.
After a scoreless first quarter, Staggers put the first points on the board with 10:22 left in the second period on a 27-yard run. That was all the scoring the first half would see.
Barnes dove in from a yard out with 7:31 left in the third quarter to give the Wolves a 14-0 advantage. Barnes mirrored his first score with another one-yard dive to put Newberry on top, 21-0 at the 3:55 mark of the third stanza. Markelle Castle put the final points on the board with an 11-yard run to make the final tally 28-0 in favor of the hosts.
