Mars Hill felled at home by Bulldogs

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (1-8, 1-8 SAC) was defeated at home versus Wingate (8-6, 8-5 SAC) by a score of 92-70 Saturday afternoon.
Wingate hit their first two attempts of the day, both three-pointers, to go up 6-0 with 53 seconds played. The Lions closed the gap down to four, 10-6, following two Javonte Cooke free throw makes. Mars Hill kept it within four until a 7-3 Bulldogs' run saw the advantage jump to eight, 22-14 with 10:08 remaining in the first half.
Another 8-0 run just moments later ballooned the lead up to 13 with 7:34 left in the half as Andreas Wilson hit all three free throw attempts after a Mars Hill shooting foul. The Lions knocked the deficit down to single digits off of a Reggie Wright layup, but a buzzer-beating mid-court three-pointer from Francis Sio sent the Bulldogs into the half up 47-35 after 20 minutes.
Jarren Cottingham led all players with 14 points followed by Wilson's 11. Wright led the Lions with 10 while Jeremy Peck added eight points and six rebounds.
With 8:15 played in the second half, the Bulldogs pushed their lead up to 22 off of a four-point play conversion from Wilson. Wilson struck later in the frame to push their lead to a game-high 26 points off of another three-pointer.
Cottingham once again led all players with 13 points in the second half and ended the night with 27 followed by Wilson's nine. Cooke led the Lions with eight while Justus Shelton went 3-for-3 from the floor, adding seven points. Wright paced the Lions' offense with 15 points followed by Cooke and Peck's 10 apiece.
The Lions travel on Monday night to face UVA Wise. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
