Wingate Defeats Women's Basketball
The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 74-63 to Wingate in Stanford Arena
MARS HILL, N.C.- The Mars Hill women's basketball team lost 74-63 to Wingate in Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon. Wingate improves to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Lions fall to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
Mars Hill was led by Camille Glymph with 17 points and Paige Chavis with 16 points. Raven Brown scored a career high eight points. Kelsey Espinosa led the Lions with six rebounds.
Andrea Bertrand led Wingate with 24 points, followed by Shelby Tricoli with 11 and Chantal Dunbar with 10. Dunbar had a double-double with 17 rebounds. Brittany Hill dished out seven assists, with Kelli Bonner handing out six helpers.
Wingate opened the game on a 7-0 run and held a 12-4 lead with 14:33 to play in the opening half. After the Bulldogs took a 10 point lead, 18-8 at the 12:26 mark of the opening half, the Lions went on a 7-2 run to pull within five, 20-15, with 9:43 remaining. Wingate pushed their advantage back to nine at 26-17 before the Lions went cut the Bulldog advantage to one, 2827, following a pair of Cadence Wilmoth free throws. Consecutive baskets by Alex Tomlinson and Bertrand gave Wingate a five point lead with just under three minutes to play before a Brown jumper with 25 ticks left gave the visitors a 34-31 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 9-2 run, taking a 43-33 lead just over two minutes into the second half. Mars Hill answered with a 10-0 run, tying the contest at 43 following an Espinosa layup with 13:48 to play. Bertrand put the 'Dogs back on top on their next possession as they pulled ahead to a 49-45 lead at the 12 minute media timeout. A Chavis 3-pointer cut the Lion deficit to three, 53-50, but Wingate extended their lead to nine points, 61-52, following an Alysia Hudson layup. Glymph sank a 3-pointer with 6:40 to play for a 61-56 deficit but the Lions got no closer down the stretch.
Wingate held a 43-29 advantage on the glass while outshooting the Lions 48.3 percent to 37.3 percent.
Mars Hill returns to action next Saturday at Coker. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
