Mars Hill opens 2021 slate on road versus Cavaliers

WISE, Va. - The Mars Hill women's basketball team (1-3, 1-3 SAC) was defeated by UVA Wise (3-1, 3-1 SAC) by a score of 101-69 Wednesday night.
A 14-0 run by the Cavaliers in the first quarter saw UVA Wise go up 21-6 with under five minutes to play in the first quarter. The Cavaliers maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the frame, carrying a 26-12 advantage into the second. Hanna Oliver led all players with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers.
Nia Vanzant and Kyla Daniels led their respective teams in the second quarter with seven points apiece. UVA Wise bolstered their lead to as many as 22 in the first half following a late 6-0 run in the frame. Mars Hill cut the deficit to 20 in the final 11 seconds of the half.
Both teams carried a balanced offense in the third with Oliver, Vanzant, and Caitlyn Ross netting six apiece for the Cavaliers while De'Ja Marshall led the Lions with seven points in the frame followed by Gabby Gianikos and Alexis Pardue's five apiece.
Gianikos led all players in the final stanza with nine points while Marshall matched her third quarter output. Oliver and Vanzant each scored six apiece for UVA Wise.
Oliver led all players with 26 points followed by Vanzant's 25 on the night. Ross pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds.
Gianikos led the Lions with 21 points and added five rebounds. Marshall netted 19 while collecting a new career-high 19 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year. Pardue chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.
The Lions return home on Saturday, January 9 when they square off against Newberry in Chambers Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
