Women's Soccer Falls to Erskine in Overtime

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lions lost in overtime, 2-1 on the road at Erskine in women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon. The Lions fell to 1-2 overall while the Flying Fleet improved to 1-1 on the season.
Julia Johnson gave Mars Hill a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute off a cross from Samantha Pyle. The teams carried that score into the locker room at halftime.
Marissa Mitko tied the match at 1-all at the 59:07 mark off a free kick from around 30 yards out. Neither team would be able to score through the final 30 minutes of regulation and the game would head to overtime.
Just under three minutes into the first overtime period (92:44), Vivian Gonzalez would find the back of the net on a cross from Maddi Cole to end the contest.
Erskine outshot the Lions, 11-4. Erskine enjoyed 11 corner kicks as opposed to Mars Hill who had two. Mars Hill was called offsides six times while Erskine was called offsides only once. Clare Witt played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Lions and made three saves. Tonje Jorgensen played the final 47:44 in the net for MHU and made two saves. Sara Dooley played the entire match in goal for Erskine and made three saves.
Mars Hill will return to action on Friday, September 7, when they face Francis Marion at the Catawba College Classic held in Salisbury, N.C. The match is slated to start at 5 p.m.
