Catawba Sweeps Volleyball
Catawba defeated Mars Hill 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21 on Saturday
SALISBURY, N.C.- The Mars Hill volleyball team lost 3-0 to Catawba in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Indians won by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21. Catawba improves to 7-7 and 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference play while Mars Hill drops to 4-7 and 2-5.
Lauren Hochstetler led Mars Hill with 11 kills, followed by 10 kills from Elizabeth Kaeser with 10 kills. Victoria Kaiser led the Lions with 22 digs, followed by 12 from Kaeser and 11 from Andie Russell.
Catawba was led by Erin Morant and McKenzie Garrison with eight kills. Evan Schultz had 13 digs to lead Catawba, followed by Garrison and Allison Benton with 11 digs and Meredith Furr with 10.
The Indians took a 10-6 lead in the first set before a service error evened the set at 12. A Rachel Gallup kill began a three point run for the Indians, 15-12, before Catawba enjoyed a 20-15 lead following a Lion attack error. A pair of Catawba errors brought the Lions to within two, 21-19, but a pair of Lion errors and two Catawba kills would end the set.
A Kaeser kill gave the Lions a 10-8 lead in the second set before two MHU errors would tie the set. Catawba went on an 8-2 run for an 18-12 lead as the Lions would get no closer than five the rest of the way as the Indians took a 2-0 lead thanks to a 25-17 set two win.
Consecutive kills from Kaeser and Hochstetler gave the Lions a 16-11 lead in the third set. Catawba would respond with four straight points to pull within one, 16-15. Mars Hill would go on a 3-0 run sandwiched by a pair of Courtney O'Keefe kills for a 19-15 lead before an Indian kill and three straight Lion errors gave the hosts a 20-19 advantage. A Hochstetler kill brought the Lions to within two, 23-21, but a Hopper kill and MHU attack error would end the match.
Mars Hill travels to Brevard on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
