Volleyball Topples Trojans
Mars Hill completes the season sweep of Anderson with a 3-1 victory
ANDERSON, S.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team completed the season sweep of Anderson thanks to a 3-1 win over the Trojans in Abney Athletic Center on Friday. The Lions won by scores of 17-25, 26-24, 25-23 and 25-21. Mars Hill improves to 6-15 overall and 4-10 in the South Atlantic Conference while Anderson drops to 9-11 and 7-7.
Mary Kate Griffin led Mars Hill with 17 kills, followed by Maddie Spurgeon with 10 kills. Victoria Kaiser had 17 digs, followed by Griffin with 14 and Rebecca Butler with 13. Ellen Davis tallied four blocks. Griffin also had three service aces. Andie Russell handed out 21 assists.
Anderson was led by Serena Jackson with 17 kills and Jessica Harris with 15 kills. Emily Conard had 18 digs, with Tinsley Hallman and Marissa Mitter contributing 16 digs and 15 digs respectively.
With the first set tied at 12, Anderson went on a 6-2 lead for a 20-14 advantage. Mars Hill pulled to within four points, 20-16, but would get no closer as the Trojans claimed the opening set 25-17.
The Lions pulled ahead to a 5-2 lead in the second set before the first of many ties occurred following an AU attack error to make the set 7-7. With the Trojans leading 24-22, kills by Spurgeon and Elizabeth Kaeser would tie the set at 24. A Spurgeon service ace gave the Lions set point, with a Kaeser kill allowing Mars Hill to even the match at 1 following a 26-24 victory. Neither team would lead by more than three points during the set.
Anderson dashed out to a 14-5 lead in the third set before the Lions erased a 22-18 deficit with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 22. An MHU attack error gave the hosts a 23-22 lead before a Griffin kill, Griffin service ace and an Anderson attack error gave the Lions a 25-22 victory in the third set.
Mars Hill enjoyed a 7-2 advantage in the fourth set before a 6-1 Trojan run evened the set at 8. With the score tied at 18, Mars Hill used a 3-0 run to take a 21-18 lead thanks to kills by Butler, Russell and Griffin. Anderson cut the Lion lead to 21-19 before another 3-0 run gave the Lions a 24-19 lead. The Trojans would pull to within three points, 24-21, before a Griffin kill ended the match.
Mars Hill returns to Stanford Arena on Tuesday night, welcoming Tusculum for a 7 p.m. match.
