Lacrosse Falls to Lenoir-Rhyne
The Lions’ lacrosse team lost to no. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne 8-5 Sunday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' lacrosse team lost to no. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne 8-5 Sunday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the league. The Bears improved to 8-1 on the season, 5-0 in the SAC.
Alex Lipsky led the Lions' offense with three goals followed by Connor Fernandez with two goals. Dima Ferreira recoded two assists in the contest. Ryan Kearney played all 60 minutes in goal for Mars Hill and made 14 saves.
Collier Stone tallied four goals to pace the Bears. Eric Dickinson added two goals while Mike Hanlon recorded three assists. Ryan Crompton also played the entire game in the net for L-R and made 13 saves.
L-R outshot the Lions, 42-38 and won the ground ball battle, 37-32. The Bears won 12-of-16 face-offs and were 2-for-3 on man-up opportunities. Mars Hill was 1-for-1 on man-up attempts.
The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of play before Lipsky put the Lions on the board with 10:21 left in the first quarter. The Bears answered scoring two additional goals to lead 4-1 before Fernandes found the back of the net with 1:31 remaining in the first half of play. The Bears enjoyed a 4-2 advantage at the break.
L-R edged the Lions in shots 23-20 in the first half while Mars Hill won the first half ground ball battle, 18-15. The Bears won 6-of-8, first half, face-offs. Kearney made seven first half saves for the Lions while Crompton recorded eight first half saves.
Mars Hill came out of the locker room after the intermission and scored two unanswered goals to knot the game at 4-all. Lipsky scored both of the goals assisted by Ferreira and Nathan Stewart, respectively. The Bears then reeled off four straight goals to seal the win. Dickinson notched what would later prove to be the game winner with 12:08 left in the fourth quarter. Hanlon assisted that man-up score. Fernandez ended the scoring in the contest with 6:56 left in regulation off a pass from Ferreira to make the final tally 8-5 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will play at SAC rival Coker on Sunday, April 2. Game time is set for a 2 p.m. start
