Gregg Munn was hired as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Mars Hill University in March of 2018.

Munn will enter his eighth season in 2025 at the helm of the program totaling a 47-46-21 record over the past seven seasons.

In the 2024-25 campaign the Lions went 10-4-5 and 6-2-3 in the South Atlantic Conference which earned the Lions an at-large bid in the NCAA D2 National Championship for the first time since 2012 and first time under Munn. The Lions have made the tournament three times in program history with Munn playing a role in all three. 2011 and 2012 as a player and now 2024 as coach of the Lions. 

The 2024-25 season was one for the history books under Munn’s Leadership. In the SAC the Lions earned 6 All-Conference Selections. Peter Plougmand earned a spot on the SAC All-Conference First Team as a forward alongside fellow Senior Sam Bayly who was named First Team All-SAC Midfielder. Ben Harvey was named Second Team All-SAC Defender. Named to All SAC Third Teams were Adrian Faus as Forward, Bruno Fornes as Defender, and Nolan McMillen as a Third Team Defender.

Plougmand was also named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the year where he finished the season on 25 Goals and 6 Assists for 56 Points. Following the regular season both Peter Plougmand and Braxton Robinson were both named to the 2024 South Atlantic All-Conference Tournament Team as forwards.

Adding to their accomplishments, men's soccer placed two student-athletes on the 2024 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Men's All-Southeast Region Team.  Peter Plougmand was named First Team Forward and Sam Bayly was named Second Team Midfielder. Plougmand was then also named United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team Forward.

Adding to their on field achievements Peter Plougmand and Sam Bayly were also named 2024 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Americans, for the first time in program history. Plougmand was named first team and Bayly named second team.

Adding to their on field accomplishments Peter Plougmand, Sam Bayly, Ben Harvey, Bruno Fornes, and Nolan McMillen were all named CSC Academic All-District Selections.

Peter Plougmand and Nolan McMillen were then named College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America First Team selections.

Rounding off the year Plougmand was named D2CCA All-Southeast Region First Team as well as D2CCA All-Southeast Region Player of the Year Senior. Lions midfielder Sam Bayly was named to the D2CCA All-Southeast Region Second Team.

Adding to his many accomplishments Peter Plougmand was named 2024 Division II Conference Commissioners of America (D2CCA) Ron Lenz National Player of the Year. The first time in school and program history.

In the 2023-24 campaign the Lions went 5-7-6 and 2-4-5 in the SAC.

In the SAC the Lions earned 2 All-Conference Selections. Peter Plougmand earned a spot on the SAC All-Conference First Team as a forward. Jorge Perez was named Second Team All-SAC Forward.

Plougmand was then named D2CAA All-Southeast Region Forward and then was also named United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Third Team Forward.

Adding to their on field accomplishments Peter Plougmand, Jorge Perez, and Nolan McMillen were all named CSC Academic All-District Selections.

At the conclusion of the year Peter Plougmand was named Mars Hill University Male Student Athlete of the Year and the Lions also picked up the Community Service Award for their efforts in the community over the school year.

The Lions rounded off the year earning their fourth consecutive United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award with a cumulative GPA of 3.37, the highest recorded GPA in program history.

In the 2022-23 campaign the Lions went 8-7-2 and 5-5-1 in the SAC.

Peter Plougmand earned a spot on the SAC All-Conference First Team as a forward as well as being named a 2022 CCA First Team Forward and 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-Region First Team Forward. Plougmand finished the year with 12 goals, three assists, and 27 points.  Alongside him was Freshman Midfielder, Filip Jensen who was named in the SAC All-Conference Second Team finishing the year on two goals and five assists totaling nine points. Sophomore Jake White was named a CoSIDA Academic All-Region Defender. In the 2022 season Munn also led the Lions to their first United Soccer Coaches National Ranking in over ten years with the Lions earning their way to #14 in the nation in the month of September.

The Lions rounded off the year earning their third consecutive United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award with a cumulative GPA of 3.35.

In 2022, Munn served on the NCAA D2 Men’s Soccer Regional Committee representing the South Atlantic Conference, his first of a three-year term.

Prior to the 2022 season Munn was promoted to Director of Soccer for Mars Hill Athletics where he will oversee the soccer operations of the Men’s and Women’s soccer programs at the Hill. He will continue in his primary role as Head Men’s Coach.

Under Munn’s guidance the Lions built off the progress from the 2020-21 campaign and went 11-6-3 and 5-4-2 in the SAC in the 2021-22 campaign. The Lions narrowly lost out on Double OT to the Coker Cobras in the SAC Conference Tournament Championship, the first time they were there for over 10 years.

Kevonte Willoughby-Williams was named SAC Freshman of the Year as well as earning SAC Second Team All-Conference and All-SAC Tournament Team as a forward. Alongside him was fellow Freshman Forward, Peter Plougmand who was named in the SAC All-Conference Second Team and also the SAC All-Tournament Team having scored two pivotal overtime goals on the run to the championship final. Jeppe Christensen was named in the CoSIDA Academic All-American and Academic All-District Teams as well being a First Team SAC First Team All-Conference Defender and SAC All-Tournament Defender. Leading the line and the conference in points was Sebastian Bertilsson. Bertilsson was named United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on October 13th 2021, which was the first time in program history to achieve this award. Followed on from here Bertilsson to the SAC All-Conference First Team, 2021 CCA Second Team, and United Soccer Coaches All-Region Second Team.

At the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign, three men’s soccer lions were again acknowledged for their efforts on and off the field. Sebastian Bertilsson was awarded the Mars Hill University Athletics Male Athlete of the Year Award, picking up the award for the second consecutive year. Nolan McMillen was recognized for having Mars Hill University Athletics Highest Male GPA at 4.0 and Jeppe Christensen was named Mars Hill University Athletics Man of the Year for his efforts on the field, in the classroom, and in the Mars Hill community.

The Lions rounded off the year earning their second consecutive United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award with a cumulative GPA of 3.157.

In the summer of 2021, Munn also served as an Assistant Coach for Asheville City Soccer Club in their inaugural season in the USL 2.

In 2020, Munn led the Lions to their first SAC tournament post-season appearance in four seasons. Sebastian Bertilsson was named First Team All-SAC forward and led the conference with goals and points in the regular season. Jeppe Christensen was named in the All-SAC Second Team as a defender and Luke Manley was awarded Honorable All-Conference at defender in his freshman year. Brennan Whalen was also twice named Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in goal.

Christensen was also named South Atlantic Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2020 for his achievements on the field and in the classroom. Christensen currently holds a 3.96 GPA.

In the 2020-21 campaign, three men’s soccer lions were acknowledged for their efforts on and off the field. Bertilsson was awarded the Mars Hill University Athletics Male Athlete of the Year Award. Christensen was recognized for having Mars Hill University Athletics Highest Male GPA and Jayson Moorman, a senior out of Florida, was named Mars Hill University Athletics Man of the Year for his efforts on the field, in the classroom, and in the Mars Hill community.

Munn finished the campaign being named South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2020-21.

In the classroom the Lions earned their first United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award with a cumulative GPA of 3.05.

In his first season, Munn led the Lions to being ranked in the Southeast Region for several weeks and had Sebastian Bertilsson, Oscar Mitchell, and Jeppe Christensen named to SAC All-Conference Teams. In 2019, Jeppe Christensen was again named an All-SAC second team selection at defender.

During his tenure as head coach, Munn also serves as Men’s Chair of the Faculty-Athletic Committee, a member of the Mars Hill Experience Committee, a founding member of President Floyd's Leadership Cohort at Mars Hill University. Munn currently sits as an active member of the International Education Steering Committee for Mars Hill University.

Munn, a native of Falkirk, Scotland, was a former standout and captain at Mars Hill University. In his four years as a student athlete at Mars Hill, Munn started 75 games and played an integral part in the program’s two NCAA National Tournament Appearances (2011 & 2012) and the program’s South Atlantic Conference Championship in 2012. Throughout his playing career at Mars Hill, Munn picked up many individual and team accolades including First Team All-SAC Defender (2012), Capital One Academic All-District Team (2012), NCCSIA All-State First Team Defender (2012), SAC All-Tournament Team Defender and Second Team All-SAC Defender (2013). In 2011, Munn helped anchor a defense which saw Mars Hill lead the conference with fewest goals against per game (0.64) as well as being ranked in the top-15 in the nation in that category.

In the spring of 2014, Munn served as an assistant coach with the men’s and women's programs at Mars Hill before graduating Magna Cum Laude in Physical Education with his Concentration being in Coaching.

Following graduation, Munn was hired by the Charlotte Soccer Academy in Charlotte, N.C., as a Technical Director of Coaching and Staff Coach. Shortly after, Munn was promoted to be the Director of Coaching for the club across various age groups where he has held that role until 2018. Munn also served a short stint with the Queen’s University of Charlotte women’s soccer program in the spring of 2018 before accepting this position at Mars Hill.

Prior to relocating to the United States, Munn played with the Stirling Albion Football Club and represented Scotland at the U18 International level in 2007 and 2008. During this time, Munn was on the coaching staff with the Falkirk Football Club and the Stirling Albion Football Club as well as attending Forth Valley College in Falkirk, Scotland, where he earned a Higher National Diploma in Sports Coaching with Development of Sport.

Munn currently holds his United States Soccer Federation National B License and USSF National Youth License to add to his existing Scottish FA Licenses. Munn also holds his Sports Performance Diploma from United Soccer Coaches and a higher national diploma in sports coaching.

Munn resides in Asheville, N.C. with his wife, Stephanie and two children, Charlie (4) and Aiden (2).
