DAHLONEGA, GA. – The Mars Hill softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to North Georgia in the final game of the Steak 'N Shake Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Lions are now 2-5 on the season.
North Georgia pushed ahead 6-0 with a pair runs in the bottom of the second, benefiting from a defensive miscue by the Lions, and four more in the third off five hits, including a triple and double.
The Lions finally broke through in the top of the fourth as Kaleigh Jonas belted a one-out solo homerun to left center, her first of the season. The threat did not end there as the Lions put runners on first and second following a single by Taylor Lail and walk by Emiley Burriss. Casey Stanek laced a ball to the shortstop that was too hot to handle, scoring Cassidy Allen, who pinch ran for Lail.
Mars Hill missed a golden opportunity in the top of the sixth as Lail collected her second hit of the contest, leading off with a double to center field. However, the next three batters were retired and the Lions failed to cut into the Night Hawks lead.
MHU could not muster anymore offense over the final two innings, falling to UNG by a final of 6-2 in the final game of the tournament. Lail led the way offensively for the Lions, going 2-for-3 from the dish, while Jonas and Stanek tallied the only two RBIs for the Blue and Gold.
Kaylyn Anthony finished 2-of-2 from the plate for the Night Hawks, while five different players contributed a RBI on the afternoon.
Mars Hill will return to action on Saturday, February 18, traveling to Gaffney, S.C. to take on the Saints of Limestone College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
