Lions Sweep Cobras on Senior Day
The Mars Hill volleyball team swept Coker 3-0 on Senior Day in Stanford Arena on Saturday, winning by scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-16.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team swept Coker 3-0 on Senior Day in Stanford Arena on Saturday, winning by scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-16. Mars Hill improves to 10-19 overall and 9-13 in South Atlantic Conference play while Coker drops to 5-25 and 1-21.
Mars Hill was led by Rebecca Butler's 11 kills, with Mary Kate Griffin finishing with 10 kills. Griffin compiled three aces, with Butler recording two aces and one each from Christen Nicholson and Victoria Kaiser. Griffin had 13 digs, followed by Nicholson and Lauren Hochstetler with 10 each to lead the Lion defense.
Mars Hill jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and led by as 17, 22-5, en route to a 25-11 opening set win. The second set featured seven ties and five lead changes. Coker scored the first two points of the frame before Mars Hill took a 10-6 lead. The Lions led 21-13 before the visitors cut the lead to three, 23-20, following a Mars Hill error. Coker would get no closer as a pair of Lion kills wrapped up the set.
The Cobras and Lions struggled to separate early in the third set as the teams were within two points of each other before the Lions went on a 5-0 run to push the lead to 13-8. Coker would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as the Lions closed out the match with a 25-16 victory.
Seniors Christen Nicholson, Regan Macomson, Tori Radcliff and Hannah Wilson were honored prior to the match. Macomson tallied seven kills, with Radcliff recording three digs and Wilson picking up four digs.
Mars Hill will await pairings for the South Atlantic Conference tournament next week. The conference tournament begins Friday in Hickory, N.C. hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne.
