Lions Swept by UNC Pembroke
The Mars Hill softball team was swept by UNC Pembroke on Friday, dropping the first game 4-2 and game two 6-4 at LRA Field.
PEMBROKE, N.C.- The Mars Hill softball team was swept by UNC Pembroke on Friday, dropping the first game 4-2 and game two 6-4 at LRA Field. Mars Hill drops to 0-4 on the season while UNC Pembroke improves to 7-2.
Game 1: UNC Pembroke 4, Mars Hill 2
The Braves used a two-out rally in the fifth inning to score three runs in a come-from-behind victory.
Mars Hill got on the board in the first inning as Taylor Caviness led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Erin Vickery. In the UNC Pembroke second, Lexie Coxe reached on a leadoff single and scored on a wild pitch. Robyn Stanek led off the fourth with a double, advanced to third on a Jamie Booze groundout and scored on an error.
After Shelby Culler retired the first two batters, Karlee Wilson singled and advanced to third on a Whitney Jackson double. Following a walk to Kaytee Wilson that loaded the bases, Jamie Johnson singled to score Karlee Wilson and Jackson, followed by an infield single to score Kaytee Wilson.
Mars Hill threatened in the sixth with runners on first and second with one out, but the Braves threw out Stanek at the plate before a strikeout ended the inning.
Booze and Culler each went two-for-three, with Booze reaching on a single and double. Stanek and Vickery each went one-for-two with a double.
Selena Ashley earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. Culler took the loss after allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings.
Game 2: UNC Pembroke 6, Mars Hill 4
UNC Pembroke scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the sweep.
Whitney Jackson and Kaytee Wilson led off the home half of the first inning with base hits and scored on a Jamie Johnson base hit. Johnson supplied an RBI base hit in the second for a 3-0 UNC Pembroke lead. Mars Hill got on the board in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run by Jamie Booze, which was answered by the Braves in the home half of the inning with a Brea Hartley double.
Mars Hill used the two out home run to tie the game in the fourth. Robyn Stanek hit her first home of the season for a 4-2 deficit. Following an error that allowed Erin Vickery to reach, Aleshia Peek hit her second home run of the season to tie the game at 4.
Following a leadoff single by Taylor Gerhart in the fifth, Megan Hilliard gave the Braves the go-ahead run on a two out base hit. A Hartley single in the sixth plated Jackson for the final run of the game.
Stanek went two-for-three with a home run, single and RBI. Peek went one-for-three with a home run, run scored and two RBIs.
Katie Saunders earned the win, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Dakota Leviner struck out two batters in 1.2 innings to earn the save.
Chelsea Broughman took her second loss of the year, allowing four runs, three earned, with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings of relief. Taylor Hussey allowed two runs on four hits in an inning.
Mars Hill continues their road trip tomorrow at Mount Olive at 1 p.m.
