Softball Swept by Lincoln Memorial
The Mars Hill softball team was swept by Lincoln Memorial on Friday, dropping the opener 2-1 in 10 innings before suffering a 7-6 defeat in the nightcap.
HARROGATE, TENN.- The Mars Hill softball team was swept by Lincoln Memorial on Friday, dropping the opener 2-1 in 10 innings before suffering a 7-6 defeat in the nightcap. Lincoln Memorial improves to 22-20 overall and 11-9 in the South Atlantic Conference while Mars Hill drops to 12-21 and 8-12.
Game 1: Lincoln Memorial 2, Mars Hill 1 (Final-10 innings)
Emilee Soloman's walk-off single drove in Ashlea Hunter to give the Lady Railsplitters a 2-1 victory.
Lincoln Memorial loaded the bases in the second inning before Shelby Culler struck out Soloman to end the inning. A pair of walks followed by a wild pitch put runners at second and third before a Meredith Johnson sacrifice fly put the hosts on the board. Culler escaped further damage thanks to a pair of groundouts.
Patricia Thompson reached on a two out double in the fifth and scored on an Aleshia Peek base hit to tie the contest.
After neither team was able to anything going in the eighth, Lincoln Memorial had the winning run at third base with one out in the ninth, but Chelsea Broughman was able to work out of the jam thanks to a foulout and popout.
The Lady Railsplitters prevailed in the tenth after a groundout advanced Hunter to third before Soloman's winning hit.
Erin Vickery went two-for-four with two singles to lead the Lions. Peek went one-for-four with an RBI single. Thompson went one-for-two with a double and run scored. Ellen Tillman and Hollie Norris each reach on a base hit. Soloman went four-for-five to the Lady Railsplitters.
Samantha Smith earned the win, allowing one run on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 10 innings. Broughman took the loss after she allowed an unearned run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Culler allowed one run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
Game 2: Lincoln Memorial 7, Mars Hill 6
Jennifer Moose's walk-off single capped a two-run seventh inning as the Railsplitters prevailed 7-6.
Lincoln Memorial pushed the first run across in the second inning as Meredith Johnson led off the frame with a home run.
Patricia Thompson reached on a one out single in the third inning, followed by singles from Aleshia Peek and Melissa Garcia to load the bases. Thompson scored on a Robyn Stanek single, with Peek and Garcia scoring on an Erin Vickery two-run single. Ellen Tillman plated Stanek with a base hit, followed by a Jamie Booze groundout that scored Vickery. Taylor Hussey helped her own cause with a single to right field that scored Tillman, giving Mars Hill a 6-1 lead.
Amanda Snow brought the Lady Railsplitters to within a pair with a three-run home run with one out in the third inning. Snow hit a double with one out in the fifth and scored on a Moose sacrifice fly to bring the hosts within one.
Thompson reached on a one out single in the sixth before stealing second and third with two outs. Samantha Smith would get a strikeout to end the inning.
Emillee Soloman led off the seventh with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored the tying run on a Snow double. After a Johnson single put runners at the corners, Moose ended the game with a single up the middle.
Thompson went three-for-three with three singles and a run scored. Tillman went three-for-four with three singles and an RBI. Vickery went two-for-four with a single and two RBI. Peek and Stanek each went one-for-four with a single. Garcia and Hussey were each one-for-three with a single, with Hussey adding an RBI.
Smith earned the win, allowing five hits with a strikeout in four shutout innings. Chelsea Broughman took the loss as she allowed one run on three hits in a third of an inning. Hussey allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits with a strikeout in six-plus innings.
Mars Hill travels to Newberry on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
