Softball Splits Doubleheader with Queens
Lions drop the opener 4-0 before a 9-5 victory in the second game
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Mars Hill softball team split a doubleheader with Queens on Friday at Freedom Park, dropping the opener 4-0 before winning the nightcap 9-5. Mars Hill improves to 9-16 overall and 5-7 in the South Atlantic Conference; Queens is 11-25 and 4-8.
Game 1: Queens 4, Mars Hill 0
Mars Hill was held to four hits in the game as the Royals scored three runs in the fourth inning en route to a 4-0 win.
After a leadoff single to start the home half of the third, Whitney Britt brought home the game's first run with a one out single for a 1-0 Queens lead. The Royals scored three runs in the fourth thanks to a Taylor Cheek single and a Robyn Levine two-run double.
Shelby Culler went two-for-two with two singles, while Aleshia Peek went one-for-three with a single and Taylor Lail went one-for-two with a single.
Evie Scott earned her second win of the year, allowing four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in seven innings. Culler took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with a strikeout in 3.2 innings.
Game 2: Mars Hill 9, Queens 5.
Aleshia Peek's solo home run in the fourth inning broke a 5-5 tie as the Lions went on to split the doubleheader thanks to a 9-5 victory.
Ellen Tillman gave Mars Hill a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two run single that scored Melissa Garcia and Robyn Stanek. The Lions added two more runs in the second inning thanks to a Peek sacrifice fly, followed by a Garcia base hit and a two-run home run by Stanek.
Queens answered with four runs in the second inning, all with two outs. Whitney Britt plated a pair of runs with a double before scoring on a Taylor Rosenbalm double. Rosembalm would score on a Venus Martinez single.
Peek led off the fourth inning with her fifth home run of the season to give the Lions a 5-4 lead. In the fifth inning, Jamie Booze hit a solo home run with one out, followed by a Patricia Thompson single that scored Chelsea Broughman. Peek brought Thompson home with a double.
Stanek went two-for-four with two singles and two RBI. Booze went two-for-four with a single, home run and RBI. Garcia and Erin Vickery each went two-for-four with two singles. Tillman went one-for-four with a single and two RBI.
Broughman earned the win as she allowed one run on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of relief. Whitley Baker was charged with the loss as she allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Mars Hill returns to Ponder Field on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against mountain rival Tusculum College.
