Women's Basketball Drops SAC Opener to LMU
The Lions’ women’s basketball dropped their SAC opener to Lincoln Memorial University, 75-54 Wednesday night in Stanford Arena.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' women's basketball dropped their SAC opener to Lincoln Memorial University, 75-54 Wednesday night in Stanford Arena. Mars Hill fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the SAC. The Railsplitters improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the league.
Kelsey Espinosa led MHU with 18 points and seven rebounds. Genice Lane came off the bench to add 14 points and five boards. Aisjah Roan led LMU with a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. MaRanda Bodie also recorded 15 points while Samantha Satterlee tallied 10.
LMU scored 50 points in the paint, 26 second-chance points and 16 points off the break. The Railsplitters won the battle of the boards, 48-29.
Hot first half shooting led to the Railsplitters jumping out to an 11-point lead (15-4) after Satterlee hit a layup. The Railsplitters led by as many as 26 points (38-12) with 5:12 left in the first period after Bodie hit a couple of free throws. LMU went into the locker room at the break up 45-20 after shooting 50% (19-38) from the floor in the first frame. In contrast, the Lions only connected on 28.6% (6-21) of their attempts.
The Railsplitters maintained a comfortable lead the entire second half. MHU cut the deficit to 19 points (59-40) with 8:26 left in regulation after Sydney Comer hit a shot in the lane. That was as close as the Lions would get. LMU enjoyed their largest lead of 29 points (75-46) when Haley Nelson hit a shot from behind the arc with 1:56 on the clock. The Lions scored the game's last eight points to make the final tally 75-54 in favor of the visitors.
Mars Hill will play at SAC rival Catawba College on Saturday, November 23. Tip-off in Salisbury, N.C. is set for 2 p.m.
