Women's Basketball Loses to Bears
The Lions lost to Lenoir-Rhyne 73-50 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions lost to Lenoir-Rhyne 73-50 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena. Mars Hill fell to 8-18 overall and 7-15 in the SAC. The Bears improved to 22-5 on the season and 17-5 in the league. Prior to the game, MHU recognized their lone senior on the squad, Autumn Ward.
Brittany Baker led MHU with 14 points and five rebounds followed by Cadence Wilmoth with nine points and the same number of rebounds. Mars Hill struggled offensively connecting on only 30.6% (19-62) from the floor and 9.5% (2-21) from behind the arc.
Jenni Gust led L-R with 17 points followed by Jazmine Charles with 13 points and six boards. The Bears out rebounded MHU, 50-36 and received 48 points from their bench.
The first half was closely played. The Lions enjoyed a six point lead (17-11) with 12:09 left in the first half after Wilmoth hit a pair of free throws. The Bears closed out the half on a 20-9 run to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room at the break.
The second half belonged to the Bears. A layup by Gust gave L-R a 10-point (49-39) advantage at the 12:23 mark and then the Bears outscored the Lions 21-7 over the next 10 minutes to enjoy their largest lead of 24 points (70-46) with 2:46 left in regulation. L-R went on to win, 73-50.
Today's contest ends the 2013-14 campaign for the Lions.
