Women's Basketball Beats Coker, 57-54

MARS HILL, N.C. – Ansley Ricker sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds left in regulation to lift Mars Hill over Coker College in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena. The Lions improved to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the SAC. The Cobras fell to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in the league.
Ricker led the Lions with 13 points and four rebounds. Autumn Ward added 12 points while Sydney Comer recorded 10 points in the win. Genice Lane led the Lions on the boards with seven while also tallying six points. The Lions scored 19 points off of 15 Coker miscues.
Hailey Yohn and Jessica Cohn led Coker scoring 18 and 16 points in the contest, respectively. Cohen added eight rebounds. Coker out rebounded the Lions 42-30 and scored 13 second chance points.
Kelly Godbout hit a 3-pointer 18 seconds into the game and the Cobras would lead for most of the first half. Yohn hit a jumper with 6:50 left in the first period to give Coker their largest lead of the game of nine points (21-12). MHU then went on a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the contest with 45 seconds left in the half after Lane hit a shot in the paint. Yohn answered with a shot from behind the arc in the final seconds of the frame to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with Coker leading 28-27.
The Cobras came out in the second half and scored seven unanswered points to take a 35-27 lead with 16:51 on the clock after Cohen hit a layup. Coker could not put the Lions away down the stretch and after a couple of ties, Ricker was fouled driving in the lane and calmly sank the game-winning shots at the charity stripe.
After a Cobra timeout, Katie Stevens picked off an errant pass from Tanesha Stevens with two ticks left in regulation. A quick foul sent Stevens to the free throw line and she sealed the win connecting on both shots to make the final tally 57-54 in favor of the hosts.
Mars Hill will host Winston-Salem State University on December 19. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
