Tazzetta leads Mars Hill to season-opening win over Emmanuel

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (1-0) defeated Emmanuel (0-1) by a scoer of 14-5 to kickoff their 2023 season.
Alexa Tazzetta opened the contest with a natural hat-trick, scoring three goals in the first 3:08 of the game. Following a Haley Stallings tally in the first, Mina Muirhead netted two goals, capping off a 6-0 first frame for the Lions.
Emmanuel responded by scoring the first three goals of the second, two from the stick of Justine Dorelas and one from Anna Gill. With 17 seconds left in the half, Chandler Werner tallied her first as a Lion. Sydney Joyce assisted on the goal, her second assist of the half.
In a reversal from the second quarter, Mars Hill outscored Emmanuel 3-1 in the third with goals coming from Werner, Tazzetta, and Samantha Newton. Gill netted her second of the day for Emmanuel in the stanza.
Mars Hill tacked on four more goals in the fourth with Muirhead netting her third for the hat-trick. Stallings and Newton scored their second goals of the afternoon while Joyce recorded her first of the season.
Tazzetta led all players with five points (4g, 1a) followed by Muirhead (3g, 1a) and Joyce's four (1g, 3a). Dorelas and Gill led Emmanuel with two goals apiece.
Both Madison Duncan and Laila Sampson allowed seven goals on the afternoon with Duncan getting credited with the loss. Lauren Bryner made nine saves in the winning effort.
Mars Hill returns to action on Saturday, February 11 when they host Converse inside Meares Stadium. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
