Joyce records hat-trick in SAC opener against L-R

HICKORY, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-4, 0-1 SAC) fell to Lenoir-Rhyne (2-3, 1-0 SAC) by a score of 15-7 Saturday afternoon in their South Atlantic Conference opener.
The Bears led Mars Hill 3-2 after the opening 15 minutes of play, getting goals from three different goal scorers. Sydney Joyce scored both Mars Hill goals in the first quarter.
Kaitlyn Cavanaugh and Chloe Christensen struck twice in the second as the Bears led 7-3 entering the half. Cavanaugh's second of the frame netted her hat-trick. Joyce scored the lone Lions' tally, also completing her hat-trick bid. Chandler Werner picked up the assist.
The second half saw Lenoir-Rhyne outscoring the Lions 8-4, recording back-to-back 4-2 quarters. Haley Stallings scored both Mars Hill goals in the third while Samantha Newton scored both Lions' markers in the fourth. Alexa Tazzetta and Camryn Marcey collected assists on both of Stallings' goals.
Cavanaugh led all players with six points (5g, 1a) followed by five (3g, 2a) from Kirra Olson. Joyce led the Lions with three points (3g) followed by two apiece from Stallings and Newton (2g).
Teanna Seiben stopped nine shots in 45 minutes for the win. Lauren Bryner made a game-high 10 saves.
Mars Hill returns home on Saturday, March 11 when they host Catawba. First draw is set for 4 p.m. inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
