Lions open season at home versus Belmont Abbey

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill acrobatics and tumbling team (0-1) opened their 2024 season versus Belmont Abbey (1-0) Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 264.640-250.960.
Mars Hill narrowly trailed after the opening compulsory event. They outscored the Crusaders in the tumbling heat, posting an 8.6 to Belmont Abbey's 7.95.
In the acro event, the Crusaders recorded three scores over 9.0 with their highest being in the 7-element; a 9.55. They continued their momentum in the pyramid event, as all three scores were a 9.75 or higher, including their inversion heat score of a 9.95. The Lions, in the open heat, outscored Belmont Abbey by one-tenth of a point with 9.85.
Mars Hill took two of three heats in the toss event. Their 8.75 scored 450 Salto topped the Crusaders by .15 of a point and in the synchronized heat, held an 8.90 to Belmont Abbey's 8.80.
The Crusaders took four of six heats in the tumbling event with their highest score coming in the open pass with an 8.850. The Lions highest mark also came in the open pass, an 8.725. They took the duo and trio pass from Belmont Abbey with scores of 8.45 and 8.25, respectively.
Rounding out the first meet of the year, the Crusaders scored a 96.54 in the team event as the Lions scored an 87.91.
The Lions return to the mats on Friday, February 16 when they host Converse and Wingate in their first tri-meet of the year. Action is set for a 6 p.m. start inside Chambers Gymnasium.
