Baseball Completes Sweep of Brevard
The Lions’ baseball team completed the South Atlantic Conference three-game sweep of Brevard Sunday afternoon by defeating the Tornados 4-1.
BREVARD, N.C. – The Lions' baseball team completed the South Atlantic Conference three-game sweep of Brevard Sunday afternoon by defeating the Tornados 4-1 at Gil Coan Field. Mars Hill improved to 20-17 overall and 8-7 in the league. Brevard fell to 9-26 on the season, 2-13 in the SAC.
Hunter Merrill and Gray McCurry both went 2-4 with a RBI at the plate to lead the Lions offensively. Jared Mathewson picked up his second win (2-0) of the season on the mound for the Lions throwing four innings allowing seven hits and one run. Tom Mastrodonato obtained his first save of the season pitching the final inning allowing just one hit and striking out one batter.
Brayden Morris went 2-4 with an RBI to pace the Tornados at the plate. Drake Black took the loss (2-5) for Brevard on the mound.
Morris singled through the right side to plate Schuyler Martire and score the Tornados only run of the contest. Travis Owens tied the game at 1-all in the fourth inning when he singled to drive in Matt Honeycutt.
Daniel Vitello scored what would later prove to be the game winner on a sacrifice fly to left field that sent Devin Mangum home. A Gray McCurry single in the sixth frame sent Honeycutt to the plate and made the score 3-1 in favor of the Lions. Honeycutt led the at-bat off with a double down the left field line. Merrill added an insurance run when drove in Gray McCurry on a fielder's choice in the Lions' last at-bat. Mastrodonato held the Tornados at bay in the bottom half of the inning to make the final score 4-1 in favor of the visitors.
Mars Hill will play a double-header at Bluefield State on Wednesday, April 5. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
